Army’s New Tech Wall: The ₹1,476 Cr BEL Defense Deal

The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹1,476 crore contract with state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of five ground-based mobile electronic systems for the Indian Army, featuring at least 72% indigenous content.

These mobile systems are designed to enhance air defence capabilities across varied terrains by enabling dominance in the electronic—or “invisible”—battlefield through advanced sensing and processing technologies.

According to BEL, the systems fall into three key categories: Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), Communications Intelligence (COMINT), and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT). Their primary functions include detecting and intercepting radar emissions and communication signals with high precision, accurately locating the source of these signals, and identifying electronic signatures to determine the type of enemy equipment in use.

The systems will also process and analyse data in real time to support operational decision-making, helping armed forces detect, track, and effectively counter hostile electronic activity.
